The Drop is a New Orleans-based creative, subscription program designed to make collecting easy and accessible and support local artists. Every two months, three artists are invited to create 100 works for the subscribers. Mowing the Lawn is my multifaceted contribution. Subscribers receive a three-color, screen-printed storyboard stowed inside a patterned envelope. The print elements combine to present the Sisyphean reality that is yard maintenance. On January 23, at the reception celebrating the release of this round of The Drop, I performed as the lawnmower on an astroturf lawn. Using a push reel mower, I would maintain my lawn every few minutes, then sit and enjoy a beverage. When I finished the beverage, I moved to the other side. See below for images. As part of the prize I received a featured booth at the SCOPE art fair in Miami during the first week of December. I performed multiple times on all six days of the fair. At the beginning of each day, I unpacked and assembled the Stationary Bi-barisousaphone. Multiple times each evening I presented "A Show" - the flawed magic show, tap routine performed to impress a chair. The show ends as I dance with the chair strapped to my back. Drawing inspiration from early cinema and contemporary performance artists, I craft this visual yarn keeping in mind moments from my family history. I incorporate the personal stories, implicit in the narratives, hoping to enhance the sense of sincerity and intimacy in the film. In Arranging Suitcases, I draw from the story of how my paternal grandmother transitions in life after her first husband dies. She reconnects with an old friend that she marries and moves with to a new town to start a new life. In the same manner as Moving a Tree, I present this film in a carefully curated environment that heightens the immediacy of the work for the viewer. The film, shown on a large, flat-screen television, is surrounded by custom wallpaper, character drawings and objects from the production. In this movie, the protagonist fells a decaying walnut by hand, carries the logs on his back to the top of a nearby hill, and reconstructs the pieces into a tree-like monument. Drawing inspiration from early cinema and contemporary performance artists, I craft this visual yarn with moments from my family history in mind. The personal stories, implicit in the narrative, enhance the sense of sincerity and intimacy in the film. Moving a Tree re-presents the story of my maternal grandfather’s struggle with dementia and how my grandmother came to cope with the gradual deterioration of her husband’s mind and body. I present the film in a carefully curated environment to heighten the immediacy of the work for the viewer. The film, shown on large, flat-screen television, is surrounded by custom wallpaper, character drawings and objects from each production. It is a hybridization that evades simple classification. For some, this is exciting. It disturbs others. That Thing is a little-understood entity. But its motives are mostly conspicuous. As a composite, That Thing seeks mythological status, like the minotaur, so it occasionally performs tasks in public circumstances and encourages the propagation of its image and story through the internet. I am interested in creating modern mythologies, manufactured by a collective reaction within new media.
